Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to enter the IABC/Detroit Renaissance Awards?
The IABC/Detroit Renaissance Awards program is open to all communicators in southeast Michigan, northwest Ohio and southwest Ontario. The awards program is designed to promote the image, marketing or programs of a specific business or institution. Publications sold at newsstands, through subscriptions or in any other manner are ineligible.

Do I have to be an IABC member to enter?
No, the Renaissance Awards program is open to non-members as well as IABC members in southeast Michigan, northwest Ohio and southwest Ontario.

What is the time frame for an entry's eligibility?
More than half of the submitted entry must have been published, broadcast or implemented from March 1, 2008 through March 1, 2009.

Can I submit the same entry in more than one category?
Yes, you may submit the same entry in as many different categories as is applicable. You must tailor your work plan to fit the individual categories. A separate entry fee will apply for each category in which your work is entered.

Can I submit more than one entry?
Yes. There is no limit to the number of entries you can submit for the IABC/Detroit Renaissance Awards. A separate work plan, work sample, entry form and entry fee are required for each submission.

How do Renaissance Award entry fees compare to fees charged by other chapters?
In a recent survey of similar-size IABC chapters, the Detroit Renaissance Awards was among the lowest in the nation. Proceeds from the awards help fund IABC/Detroit activities all year long, including programs, networking opportunities and more.

If a project was created by an agency, client or freelancer, who enters it?
The agency, client or freelancer may enter as long as the entrant includes an accompanying letter of consent acknowledging approval before submitting an entry. If the same entry is submitted unbeknown to either the agency/client and/or freelancer, both entries will be disqualified.

If my project was created by a team, whom do I list as the entrant? How do I ensure that other members of the team receive credit for working on the project?
The entrant's name should be the primary contact person who is submitting the project on behalf of the team. This person should fill in and submit the entry form. The number of people who worked on the project team will not affect the judging process. If your entry wins an award, the contact person listed will be asked whether any other project team members should be formally recognized for the award. The entrant must have worked on the project.

Who judges the entries?
IABC/Detroit recruits communication professionals from other IABC chapters similar in size and scope of IABC/Detroit.

What are the award levels and how are awards determined?
Judges may designate up to one Award of Excellence, one Award of Merit and one Award of Honor for each category based on a numerical scale. Judges also may choose not to designate an award. All Award of Excellence winners in the Communication Management categories advance to a second round of judging to determine the Presidents Award. Past IABC/Detroit presidents judge these entries. Award of Excellence winners in the Communication Skills and Communication Creative categories will be considered for the Best of Show award. One Best of Show will be presented in the Communication Skills and Communication Creative divisions. A blue ribbon panel of communicators will make Best of Show selections. All judges' decisions are final.

Will I get my entry back?
You may pick up your entries and feedback at the conclusion of the awards ceremony in June 2009. IABC/Detroit is not responsible for lost or damaged samples. All entries not picked up after the awards ceremony will be discarded.

Can I order additional awards?
Yes, additional awards may be purchased after the June awards ceremony. Information on purchasing additional awards will be provided during the awards dinner.

How are winners notified?
Winners only will be notified in late May via e-mail. However, the award level, including Presidents Award and Best of Show, will not be announced until the actual ceremony.

When is the awards ceremony?
The 2009 Renaissance Awards will be held in June 2009. More information will be available in April 2009.
